Profile

Martin is a health and safety consultant at ICE Risk management and has experience in a range of sectors including entertainment and construction. He has worked in various roles such as Event Safety Consultant, Production Safety Officer and H&S Manager and has an in depth understanding of how policy and process are designed and how to apply it to an organisation Martin comes from an entertainment and events background and has spent over 20 years in Technical Project Management overseeing the safe installation and dilapidation of large corporate events in venues and arenas across the UK and Europe.

Martin has a keen interest in promoting the benefits of a positive approach towards wellness & wellbeing and enjoys helping shape the way an organisation approaches and behaves towards subjects such as mental ill health and the wider effects they can have on their employees or loved ones.

Current Project

Martin currently works on the health and safety services we provide to the insurance sector in the UK and Ireland; this work is generally carried out for insurance underwriters or brokers and is primarily designed to improve the insurers understanding of the risk associated with their cover and the most effective way it can be reduced. This is achieved using in-person workplace audits undertaken by one of our network of surveyors and desktop audits via telephone or online meetings. A health and safety liability survey examines the processes and documentation that a company has in place and provides the underwriter or broker with a risk score based upon the level and quality of evidence the company produces.

Where a survey or audit is subject to differing legislation or there is potential for the insured to work in foreign territories in close proximity to each other such as Northern & Southern Ireland, a detailed knowledge of all applicable legislation is required to ensure the assessment is both proportionate and fit for purpose for our clients.

Occupational Safety & Health

Martin has previously worked as H&S Manager for a large technical production company working in the entertainment sector and has extensive experience in understanding the health and safety compliance needs of an organisation that is subject to multiple and differing types of legislation.

Martin worked closely with the board of directors to design and implement benchmark organisational polices such as mental health and a companywide review of its training and competency framework which was recognised by an industry award in 2019.
As part of the training and competency review Martin carried out a wider assessment of the way health and safety documentation was created and communicated for internal and onsite projects. With the help of the in-house software and UX development team Martin designed and populated a bespoke risk management platform that adopted a Q&A format to improve engagement and the understanding of risk with the aim of fostering a culture of ownership at all levels of the organisation.

Event Health and Safety – The Aberdeen Arena (AECC)

Martin was responsible for the management of all pre-production documentation and planning associated with a large event across two sections of the arena campus, this required the organisation to undertake the Principal Designer, Designer & Principal Contractor role and involved close co-ordination with the client and their appointed health and safety consultant.
Due to the sensitive nature of the client’s business activities there was a need for co-operation with the emergency services and external security teams to ensure a fit for purpose system was in place for multiple eventualities and scenarios.

When the event became operational Martin was responsible for the monitoring and review of all scheduled and ad-hoc activities and provided support and advice to the onsite project teams whilst managing venue handover elements such as emergency lighting & fire alarm testing.
