Darryl is a Director of ICE Risk Management Limited, a risk management company with direct responsibility for the operations and staffing across the three divisions of the company. He has significant experience in both the construction and events sectors and has managed key projects of all sizes for the company, ranging from small build developments through to large events such as the London 2012 Olympic Games.
Darryl comes from a construction background and has been working as a health and safety specialist for the past 18 years. In this time, he has worked across all areas of construction from small contractors, helping them through accreditation and basic site safety, through to large scale £50m plus projects such as the new diplomatic precinct at Embassy Gardens and the Olympic Athlete’s Village in Stratford.
Darryl has managed full teams of operatives on larger projects as well as being the sole operative on smaller jobs. His key experiences range from Project Management, CDM Co-ordination and H&S Auditing for our construction clients to Safety Advisor before and after an event as well as throughout its delivery. His integrated approach to safety, coupled with his business acumen, enables him to deliver sound and practical advice to our clients to help them manage their projects safely, efficiently and cost effectively.
Darryl has experience in working across many sectors which include Sport, Education, Logistics, Transportation, Retail, Insurance, Property and with Government Bodies.
Darryl leads the ICE support to the London Stadium, and this is the second year he has worked on the MLB project. Responsible for the safety planning of the event build and derig; ensuring all documentation is prepared for the Local Authority licensing team. Working with multiple layers of event organisers, principal contractors and event personnel. ICE provide onsite safety personnel throughout the MLB tenancy to oversee the site operations as well as providing event safety and operation management services during the event.
Darryl has been working with the Jockey Club since 2017, supporting with safety and CDM management of the build of the Cheltenham Festival and Investec Derby. The role includes reviewing of the numerous structures erected at the events from to ensure the safe management and movement of persons around the sites during the events. During the events the role is expanded to carry out onsite monitoring of the movement of patrons with the view to make continual improvements to the event. Other services include provision of an online induction system for all build and event personnel.
Building on our long working relationship with the O2 Arena management company AEG Europe; Darryl has recently been acting as the Interim Head of Health and Safety, while they looked to recruit a full-time person for the role. Darryl has now been retained by AEG to provide ongoing support the new Head of Health and Safety.
ICE have been working with London Borough of Tower Hamlets for the last three years, providing event safety support services including:
The event includes the Fireworks Display with up to 90,000 spectators and other cultural/music events.
Darryl has provided health, safety and operational support to the London Stadium since 2015 covering events including:
We have also provided health and safety management support including the creation of policies, procedures and the business as usual health and safety arrangements.
Darryl led a team of 75 consultants during London 2012, where we provided multiple services to LOCOG throughout the year leading up to the Games and for the entirety of both the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
The range of services we provided to LOCOG included first aid and event safety training, desktop scenario planning, venue safety personnel, water safety service, athlete village safety manager and public area safety specialists. These services were delivered across more than 30 live sporting venues and multiple public areas.
As well as managing our overall approach with LOCOG and the team of consultants, Darryl was responsible for two key disciplines. Firstly, providing the Sports Management Teams with risk assessments and supporting documentation to be signed off by the various governing bodies and International Federations and secondly for managing the venue safety throughout for the North Greenwich Arena (The O2 Arena).
Darryl was engaged as the event safety advisor for the competition and had the main challenge of bringing together the venue teams from AEG with the events teams from ATP. Initially running desktop emergency planning scenarios with both teams and the emergency services to highlight the key areas of risk and where the responsibilities lay. Darryl successfully worked on this event for two years.
Darryl worked with the event management teams to deliver a suitable health and safety management system with special emphasis on communication and relevant documentation and training for the employees and volunteers involved in these events.
Initial work on the UK events was transferred across to the German arena where local regulations needed to be incorporated to meet legislative differences not just between the UK and Germany but also internally in Germany between different areas of the country.
Darryl was brought into The Oval to help them establish a suitable health and safety management system that was more in line with their needs as a rapidly growing business. Two key elements of the success of the project revolved around bespoke training for senior executives of the company and putting in place a contractor management system.
Darryl has acted as H&S Manager/CDM Coordinator for various projects which involved the implementation and management of the client company’s health and safety management system and the management of health and safety across their projects. This encompassed full planning supervisor/CDM co-ordination roles on a wide range of projects including residential and commercial with build costs ranging from £1 million – £50 million.
